Content on this page requires a newer version of Adobe Flash Player. Late model Shovelhead heads vs early Shovelhead heads Is there any difference in the late later model Shovelhead heads vs the early model shovelheads?
I recall reading in the past the 78 and later shovelhead head's combustion chamber is not as deep as pre Anyone familiar with this? There's short plug and long plug, crown, and flat fins. The early "60's" castings had more meat around the ports if your re-shaping. Never heard the Chambers are different. Just that the short plugs are more prone to plug thread problems. It is not gospel, the absolute truth, or the American Way. It is based on my experience and those I trust. Corrections are encouraged.
Head castings were changed significantly during the life-span of the Shovelhead motor. The castings have the date cast into them.
Basically there were three major revisions of the head casting. The first appeared on the generator case Shovel and lasted into the early seventies. It is distinguished by a row of equal height fins in the center, between the rocker box areas. These are decent heads, but since they're old, many aren't in good shape. Valve seats were much improved over the Panhead, made of a hardened steel alloy.
However, if you find a set of these heads, be prepared to replace the seats, as most of the used ones you'll see at the swaps have been cut several times and may exhibit significant valve seat recession.
The next revision came in the mid seventies, around or so and lasted until or Make Harley-Davidson. Model Chopper. None of the tins are mounted. When the engine was first produced, the Shovelhead had a shallower combustion chamber, larger valve drop for both intake and exhaust, better porting, and stronger valves and pistons.
This gave the new engine an extra 10 horsepower, along with a different appearance. The Shovelhead engine was created as the previous Panhead engine was becoming obsolete, with many Harley-Davidson owners demanding more power to compete with the more modern motorcycles. The engines had only 10 fins for cooling, which caused them to run hot. Another problem was that oil would pool in the cylinder heads, causing it to leak into the valves and burn oil.
Oil leakage and consumption became such a problem with the bikes, many owners reported losing as much as a quart of oil every miles.
The excessive overheating in the motors also caused serious problems, which frequently led to failure. With a lack of oil and excessive heat, the valves were prone to sticking and destroying the top end.
Numerous Harley technicians even stated that without necessary top-end modifications, the motors would often last only between and 5, miles. As a way to try to combat their financial struggles, the company merged with the American Machine and Foundry known as AMF hoping to gain help from their struggles.
After AMF took control, the merged company started to make attempts at improving the engine with their own funds. Inthe alternator was redesigned for less strain, hidden behind a new and redesigned side case. The carburetors were changed to Zenith-Bendix, improving flow and power that started to gain a better image for the engine.
Engine knock became a large problem; causing overheating that led to blown gaskets and damaged head bolts. However, the changes were not enough for the declining quality of American fuel at the time. Another problem that arose in was that the motors were fitted with electronic ignition units, which were prone to failure. Many owners would swap the units for an older point-ignition system for reliability. With many Shovelhead owners having to turn towards aftermarket parts to keep the bike running properly, Harley-Davidson realized they would have to start developing a new engine.
Belt drive was added to their motorcycles in to prevent the oil leakage from the enclosed chain, along with a 5-speed transmission and rubber motor mounts to help reduce vibration. The engine was produced untilwhere the Evolution enginewhich had aluminum heads and barrels, began to take over on most models.Move textfield up when keyboard appears swift 4
The Shovelhead engine was ultimately fitted to all of Harley-Davidson's big twin motorcycles throughout its production. The motors were first met with controversy due to the Shovelhead's weight and ground clearance. Because of this steering and weaving became a new issue that arose with motorcycles fitted with the engine. This brought the motorcycle scene at the time to a broader audience and improved sales for the company.
It allowed the engines to turn over for a longer period while idling, along with having an electric start. Because of the added weight of the larger engine on motorcycles with the Electra-glide package, the bikes were faster and more powerful at the trade off of being much harder to maneuver.
Due to the police package being a rarity, it is highly sought after by collectors. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Rider Magazine. Retrieved Cycle World. Categories : Harley-Davidson engines. Namespaces Article Talk. Views Read Edit View history.

Both engines are two-cylinder, four-valve V-Twins. Harley produced the Panhead from toand the Shovelhead from to The Panhead earned its moniker for its rocker box covers that resembled inverted baking pans, and the Shovelhead for is striking coal-shovel-style covers.
The Knucklehead proved to be a strong and reliable replacement for the Flathead V-Twin inbut the Knucklehead was a messy engine with a reputation for oil leaks. The new engine featured cubic inch displacements of 61 and 74 inches, although the motorcycle maker dropped the inch version in The Panhead also featured hydraulic lifters to reduce noise and downtime for maintenance.
The engine had virtually the same output as the Knucklehead at 50 horsepower, which boosted to 55 horsepower in Harley-Davidson installed the Panhead in its Hydra Glide bikes, which featured hydraulic telescopic front forks, which replaced the old-school Springer forks.
The engine also powered the first Electra Glide bikes. The aluminum heads vastly improved engine cooling, which was a major problem with Knuckleheads that had a tendency to overheat at high speeds. A curious difference between the Panhead and later Shovelhead models for backyard mechanics was that the Shovelhead engine easily fit into a Panhead frame, but a Panhead engine installation required alterations to a Shovelhead frame. Panhead frames featured bowlegged tubing with a trianglular motor mount.
The Shovelhead frame had different design characteristics. The Shovelhead arrived as Harley phased out the kick-starter and introduced the electric starter.Pmu jour base
The Shovelhead had the same cubic-inch, or 1, cc, displacement as the Panhead. Harley enlarged the Shovelhead to 82 cubic inches, or 1, cc in before giving way to the Evo engine in The Shovelhead essentially was an improved version of the Panhead.
It featured 10 percent more power than the Panhead. Early Shovelheads kept the lower style of the Panhead engine but bolted on a new top end. InHarley went retro by returning the oil feeds from inside the crankcase to outside the engine, and the Shovelhead kept the design.
By adding a new top on the Shovelhead, Harley used new alloy cylinder heads with iron cylinder barrels. This required a cone-shaped cover that altered the look of the Shovelhead.

Whereas the Panhead engine had valve covers, Shovelhead cylinder heads were covered by rocker boxes, which resembled upside-down coal-shovels. The nickname "Shovelhead" was adopted shortly after it was introduced. The rest of the Shovelhead motor, essentially a carryover, had a 74 cubic-inch displacement cc advertised as ccwhich was the same size as the Panhead it was replacing.
With a compression ratio ofearly Shovelheads were fed by a Linkert carburetor. The 4-speed transmission was a separate unit. Both primary drive and final drive were chain. The Harley-Davidson Shovelhead motor saw numerous changes over its 17 years in production.
For the first three years, it ran a generator and kept the old kidney-shaped timing cover from the Panhead. These to Shovelhead engines are sometimes referred to as a generator Shovel, flat-side Shovel, or Pan-Shovel. Generators and voltage regulators are always suspect on early Shovelheads. The charging systems on pre-Evo Big-Twins are hard to understand and even harder to keep charging.
From on, Shovelheads were equipped with alternators, with a new bottom end that featured a gear-drive unit. Mechanical breaker points and advance in the gear case replaced the external "timer" ignition. As the alternator and ignition were now located in the timing case, the case cover became cone-shaped. The inner and outer primary covers were redesigned for the alternator, which was mounted in the primary case.
The cone-style lower end saw use up until the Evolution motors. Harley FL models came equipped with Bendix carbs from through The redesigned oil tank now had a pull-out dipstick. Exhaust header pipes were chrome plated, and the chrome-plated flex-covers were no longer offered. Although the Harley Electra Glide is associated with saddlebags, they were not standard equipment until the seventies. Designed by Willie G.
At pounds, it was pounds lighter than an Electra Glide, and 60 pounds heavier than a Sportster. Turn-signals became mandatory in for all motorcycles sold in America. In the mid-seventies, Shovelheads were updated with an "end oiling" flywheel, where the oil was continuously fed into the lower end from the oil pump. Earlier engines were "side oiling", where the flywheels got a shot of oil once each revolution.
Either method worked but continuous flow was more efficient. From tothe Harley-Davidson Shovelhead displaced 74 cubic-inches. During production of the model year, a larger engine was offered with the FL touring bikes. Using the same base engine, displacement was increased to cc 80 cubic-inches.
This was done by boring the cylinders out to 3. The larger engine was offered on the FX series in Whereas the 74ci motor was designed to run on premium leaded fuel, the 80ci motor was designed to run on premium unleaded. The 74" and 80" Big-Twins used the same cylinder dimensions, but the 80" was bored out to the larger size. Externally, the only difference between the two Big-Twins was the 80ci had one less fin on the cylinder. Both the Harley 74ci and 80ci engines were available for several years.
